Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Thoughts on my first Furthur show

"The "play a song" comment is fairly laughable. I mean how many times did the Dead play for upwards of 20 minutes without a lyric or anything resembling a "song" except for being in the same key...maybe in the same key?"

I felt the "play a song" thing pretty hard when I saw The Dead a few years ago in DC. It's one thing to segue from a song into something free-form; quite another to start into a jam from a cold stop or to open a set with an amorphous jam. This was much less of a problem last weekend with Furthur than it was with The Dead.

"One part of Dark Star was straight 70s jazz fusion ala Miles and sounded great."

There was a part at AllGood that sounded like that. Chimenti was great.

"My only complaint with the show Sunday was that they closed the second set with Good Lovin' and I really wish they would just stop playing that song altogether."

At least it's Bobby singing a Bobby song! I'd much rather hear him sing one of his own than sing another Jerry song. Ugh.

"I think people should give them a chance. They arent the Grateful Dead and they know that. So don't go in expecting the Grateful Dead."

That's the key, I think.
